The Humane Society of Cozumel Island is dedicated to helping the stray abandoned animals in our community. The most important part of our mission is our continuing education with the local population on the importance of Spaying and neutering their pets. When our clinic opened in April 1996 we began with two rooms, no electricity, one vet and one kennel worker. Today, we have 14 paid employees, a large active group of core volunteers, active participants in local businesses and businesses in the USA and Canada. Our clinic/shelter cares for over 400 animals per month with over 43,000 free spay/neuters and surgeries performed over the last 20 years.

The majority of the animals that we receive are stray dogs that people encounter and bring to us, although there are many that are also surrendered by their owners who could not care for them properly for a variety of reasons. It’s also very common for us to arrive in the morning to animals left on our doorsteps. Every animal that comes through our doors is passed through our vetting process and sterilized to help stop the rise of the stray animal population on the Island. We then do our best to get them adopted by loving, responsible and educated individuals.

Our goal is to fully change the approach towards dog and cat overpopulation with our FREE spay/neuter program, the first of its kind in all of Latin America. By providing education to the community, we can create responsible animal-human relationships and improve the welfare of the animals on the Island.

Our work is made possible by many wonderful humans who contribute their time, talents and/or money for which we are immensely grateful.

Volunteers are a crucial part of our operation. They foster animals in need, escort them to their new homes, assist in fundraising, coordinate adoptions..and much more! If you are the type of person that enjoys hands-on work with the animals at the shelter, we can always use help walking and bathing dogs, playing with the dogs or cats, socializing those with special needs, etc. Being a volunteer is a great way to get to know about some of our shelter pets as well as make new friends with other volunteers!
